New fines for buying fake handbags proposed in Manhattan.

Buying fake or knockoff designer handbags in Manhattan may soon get more risky.  New York City Council member Margaret Chin will be introducing legislation to criminalize the purchase of such fake trademarked items.  In various parts of downtown Manhattan, the sale of knockoff handbags or sunglasses is common.  If the proposed legislation does indeed become law, knowingly purchasing a fake Kate Spade bag could result in jail time or a $1,000 fine.  While the fashion industry has long battled those who copy and sell their trademarked items, others are against the fines.  Vendors in Chinatown feel that the new fines could hurt tourism, and one vendor was quoted as stating that it’s going to empty Canal Street.
