Justice Clarence Thomas, seen here in his visit to Yale Law School last year, spoke from the bench today for first time in seven years.

For nearly seven years Justice Clarence Thomas has not spoken during Supreme Court oral arguments.  TeenJury reported on this issue two years ago.  While other justices spend this time challenging each lawyer, framing further debate, or persuading fellow justices, Justice Thomas sits back in his chair, stares at the ceiling, or rubs his eyes.  But, today, to the surprise of observers, Clarence Thomas spoke.  His words, however were not clearly heard, at least by the transcriptionist.  According to today’s official transcript, after Justice Scalia noted that a client being described in the case was represented by a Yale Law School graduate, Justice Thomas said, “Well,- he did not-.”  Laughter was heard in the courtroom.  Those in attendance indicated that Justice Thomas made a reference to Yale Law School and how it is not proof of competence.  Ironically, Thomas is a graduate of Yale Law School, however, he has a record of making hostile comments towards the university.  In his memoir, “My Grandfather’s Son,” he commented that in college and law school, he was intimidated by the other students.  In prior interviews, he suggested that his Yale diploma is worthless.  He graduated from Yale Law School in 1974, but only returned to campus for the first time in 2011, when he met with students and faculty.  Perhaps, his comments today were meant in jest.  Nonetheless, the seven year wait is over.  But was it worth it?
