Texas road to have highest speed limit in U.S.

This November, a new stretch of highway is scheduled to open just south of Austin, Texas.  The original portion of the road, Texas 130, has a speed limit of 80 m.p.h.  The Texas Transportation Commission recently adopted a speed limit of 85 m.p.h. for the new, 41-mile long extension, the highest of any road in the U.S.  Some drivers are very excited about the change.  In regard to the new limit, Alan Guckian was quoted in the San Antonio Express-News as saying,  “I would love it.  Sometimes it’s fun to just open it up.”  Safety concerns have also been voiced.  Higher speed limits lead to increased accidents and fatalities.  Complicating the decision is the fact that this toll road is privately built and owned.  Most of the tolls collected go to the owners of the highway, rather than to the state.  The owners agreed to pay the state $67 million if they set the speed limit at 80 m.p.h., but $100 million if they set it at 85 m.p.h.  The state chose the latter and will collect $100 million in January.  Do you think the state chose money over safety?  What do you think?

  1. they chose money over safety but even at 80mph it is a bit too fast especially for new drivers

    • True. 80 mph still adds risk and cuts fuel efficiency. Thanks for your comment!
